Climate change / Making recommendations

Content and Language objectives of a possible teaching unit:

 

Content:

 

  • Identify environmental impact and position it in space and time. Respect and protect our environment and have a positive attitude towards sustainable development.

  • Think about the little things we can do to try to have a positive impact on climate change and the environment.

  • Think about climate change and how it affects us on a daily basis.

  • Using the correct vocabulary to give an opinion on climate change.

 
Language:

 

  • How to make recommendations.

  • Listening and understanding what other students, and the teacher, have said.

  • Learning new vocabulary related to climate, climate change, making recommendations, etc.

  • Getting familiar with classroom vocabulary (e.g. Do you understand? Can you explain this to….? Good morning everyone…..etc.)

 
Activity description:

 

  • Brainstorm about climate change. Giving examples of actions we can do to reduce the negative impact on the environment.

  • Using the structure given in class in order to make recommendations.

  • Listening to the recommendations of others and understanding what is being said in class.

  • Actively participate in class, in English, by coming up with new ideas.

  • Explain to other classmates certain vocabulary that is unknown.

 

 
Strategy or strategies to help students understand:

 

  • Repeating.

  • Writing on the board.

  • Oral explanations.

  • Make students help each other understand new vocabulary.

 
Strategy or strategies to help students produce:

 

  • Eliciting.

  • Making students speak English and listen to each other when they are helping each other understand.

  • Not being afraid of making mistakes.

 
Language needs of the activity:

     

  • Specific vocabulary.

  • The teacher needs to think, in advance, about the possible grammatical structures and specific vocabulary the students will need in order to carry out this class successfully.

 
Results/Reflection after implementation:

 

  • Students use specific expressions to say their phrases.

  • Students know how to correctly make suggestions and recommendations to others.

  • Students will have learned new vocabulary related to the environment, climate, and climate change.

 
Other important information:

 

It is important that a good classroom atmosphere is created in order for this class to work. It is a very participative class and students are asked to get involved actively by giving their opinion, brainstorm, make recommendations etc. Without a classroom atmosphere that respects the opinion of others, this activity will not be possible.

  • Blackboard and pens of different colours.

  • Tables and chairs in a half-circle setting.

 
Student products:

 

  • Students can produce recommendation sentences and make suggestions.

  • Students will have learned new vocabulary related to climate, climate change and making recommendations.

  • Students will have actively listened to others and to the teacher.

  • Students will speak English.
