Some tips for a successful lesson

 

  1. Establish classroom rules

  2. Use different techniques to keep students quiet

  3. Get to know your students’ interests and learn their names in order to build rapport and nominate them later

  4. Prepare different activities to break up long lessons -(students’ span of attention is limited!)

  5. Think of different seating arrangements

  6. Set clear objectives at the beginning of each lesson

  7. Build background to motivate students

  8. Praise students and earn their respect

  9. Have resources prepared to be able to make changes in a lesson when activities are not working well

  10. Anticipate problems and be ready to solve them on the spot

Using different techniques to keep students quiet

 

Keeping our students quiet and attentive might be tough sometimes. Here are some ideas that we find useful when it comes to controlling the students and having a peaceful atmosphere that facilitates interaction and learning.

Thinking of different seating arrangements

 

The way our students sit in our classroom can have a big influence on their attention, participation and learning. Therefore, it is important to bear in mind how we, as teachers, arrange the classroom. Each seating arrangement has its pros and cons.

Conclusions

All seating arrangements have their pros and cons. It is quite useful to be conscious about them and not to be reluctant to change the seating arrangement of the classroom depending on the needs of the class and the group.

Making groups

 

Not only the way the students sit is important, but also who they sit with. It is a good idea to bear in mind the characteristics of the students, as well as the relation between them to assign groups.

 

Nevertheless, sometimes it can be difficult to group students and other techniques are needed. Some of these techniques are:
